Colleen Marriott was born and raised in Ogden, Utah,  the second of four children. She married Jim Marriott in 1953, and they also have four children. Colleen and Jim were a great team and supported each other in everything they did. She was a kind, wonderful mother:  adventurous and brave. Her hobbies were traveling,  caring for her children and grandchildren, reading, serving, and making everything beautiful. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she filled her house with Christmas decor, fragrant smells, and delicious food. Colleen especially loved art. She always had a sketchbook in her purse, which she carried everywhere she went to keep track of all of her ideas, projects, and drawings. Often when camping, she would paint or draw while her husband fished.   She attended Weber State College for a year before her marriage and then completed her degree at Idaho State University when most of her children were older. She loved school and excelled in her art classes. After graduating, she became the art instructor at Snake River High School. She worked very hard at developing an outstanding art program there. She started a complete art curriculum with drawing, watercolor, painting, calligraphy, illustration, and sculpting classes. She took her students on many trips to visit successful artists in their studios. One of her firmly held beliefs was that you could make a living in the art fields. Colleen was non-judgemental and welcomed all students into her classes, but they were not classes where a student could get an easy A. She had high expectations and demanded quality work. She often said that art was 90% seeing and 10% drawing or painting.  Colleen became ill with breast cancer and faced this challenge with grace, courage, and dignity. After treatment, it seemed that the cancer was gone; however,  several years later, while recovering from knee surgery, she slipped while climbing into bed and fell and broke her hip. It was then that the doctors discovered that cancer had returned as bone cancer. This disease eventually took her life in 2010. Her family has started the Colleen Marriott Youth Art Endowment Fund in her honor to support the high school art competitions for years to come.
