“Brilliant Morning” – Louisa Lorenz – 2023 1st place winner

The Bingham arts Plein Air Paint Out is a festival, exhibition, and competition open to professional and non-professional artists of all skill levels. Artists visit beautiful Bingham County in Eastern Idaho to paint, draw, and sketch the natural landscape. Spectators are welcome to watch and talk with the artists. At the end of the Festival, the public can view and purchase these unique visions of Bingham County during the Exhibition at the Candy Jar Art Gallery.

What is Plein Air?

En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air.” Plein air painting is the not-so-simple act of painting outdoors. Artist’s must handle shifting light, fluctuating temperatures, wind gusts, inclement weather and more.  The Bingham Arts Plein Air Paint Out celebrates the contributions of plein air artists to Idaho culture and the arts.

Kwani Winder

Kwani Povi Winder was born and raised in Southeast Idaho where she developed a deep love for art from the time she could hold a pencil.  She attended college at Brigham Young University-Idaho but was pursuing a degree in Biology.  Three classes shy of a bachelors, she switched to art, took her first painting class and graduated with a BFA in Oil Painting in 2013.

Kwani calls herself a stay at home artist.  She does almost all her creating with her daughter at her side, including painting en plein air.   She loves the outdoors and takes every opportunity she can to paint and learn under nature’s canopy.  She is constantly searching and studying to identify how light and form create beauty.  Her paintings are characterized by vibrant colors and loose impressionistic brushstrokes that work to infuse each piece with life.

Kwani’s work is also heavily influenced by being a Santa Clara Pueblo Indian.  Through her paintings she seeks to preserve, share and educate about her unique heritage.  She draws heavily upon her religious beliefs as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when developing and painting her native figures.

Kwani currently lives in Ogden, UT with her husband Dallen, daughter Tayva and dog Kiwi.  She loves the outdoors and is always hiking or camping.  When she is not creating she spends time with family, reading, and playing piano or viola.
